The Fusiliers Mont-Royal were part of the 2nd Canadian Division. On August 19, 1942, they took part in the commando operation in France known as operation Jubilée, also known as raid on Dieppe. Unfortunately, this operation proved to be a disaster, causing the loss of 28 officers and 516 men, either killed, wounded or taken prisoner, within the Fusiliers Mont-Royal.
It should be noted that the youngest Allied soldier to lose his life on the Western Front, Gérard Doré, was killed in action at the age of 16 years and 11 months during the Battle of Normandy. He was a member of the Fusiliers Mont-Royal.
On July 7, 1944, they embarked for France with the mission of clearing the Caen area as a unit of the 2nd Canadian Division.
The Fusiliers Mont-Royal returned to Montreal aboard the Queen Elizabeth on October 28, 1945, under the command of Lt. Col. Laurent Roy MBE.
