German Hospital in Le Havre
German Hospital in Le Havre

In 1850 the brasserie Polaire had four brick vaulted cellars built as ice houses, using ice from Norway.
In 1942 German engineers looked for a place to make a military hospital and which would become a fortress.

After various searches these existing cellars were chosen. From a cold and damp place, they will turn it into a heated, ventilated, electrified military hospital at the height of technology at the time.
It will be composed of operating theaters, anesthesia, sterilization, and treatment rooms, for a capacity of 234 beds. According to German archives, capacity will be increased to between 600 and 800 beds .

The entire site covers more than 2,000 m2 with three bunkerson the surface, including two unique custom-built ones.
The British would treat their wounded there and stay in Le Havre for a few months , as for the American army, it would arrive in Le Havre on September 18, 1944 and leave in August 1946.

English and German inscriptions are still visible, the site has been listed as a historic monument since 2017 and can be visited since 2019 by the association mémoire et patrimoine le havre 1939 1945.
