Initially, the Americans buried American and German soldiers on two adjacent plots in La Cambe during the summer of 1944. Two-thirds of the American bodies were repatriated to the USA at the request of their families, with the remaining third transferred to the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer a few kilometers away.

In 1954, following the Franco-German agreement on war graves, it was decided to make the La Cambe site one of six German cemeteries in Normandy. In addition to the8,000 German soldiers already buried on the site, the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge grouped together more than12,000 dead whose bodies had been scattered in temporary cemeteries throughout Calvados and Orne. The seven-hectare cemetery was completed in 1961 and inaugurated in September of that year.
Since then, 700 bodies of German soldiers have been found in Normandy and buried at La Cambe. 21,222 German soldiers who died during the fighting from June to August 1944 of the Battle of Normandy are buried there
