The Hebertshausen firing range was created by the SS in 1937/38. It is located at the southwestern end of the town of Hebertshausen and has a total area of around 85,000 m². In 1941and 1942, following the commissar' s order, over 4,000 Soviet prisoners of war mainly officers, Communist officials and Jews were murdered by the SS using execution sticks. The area was taken over by US troops after the war and continued to be used as a target practice area. In the 1950s, the site was ceded to the Free State of Bavaria handed over and administered by the Bavarian Ministry of Finance. The site has been under the care of the Bavarian Memorials Foundation since 1997 .
