Genbaku Dome
Genbaku Dome
The Genbaku Dome, also known as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial or the Atomic Bomb Dome, was originally the Industrial Exhibition Palace of Hiroshima Prefecture. Its name derives from the Japanese term "genbaku", short for "genshibakudan", meaning "atomic bomb".
On August 6, 1945, at 8.15 a.m., the first atomic bomb exploded 580 metres above ground level, some 130 metres south-east of this building, at the level of Shima Hospital (Ground Zero), although it was the Aioi Bridge, recognizable by its T-shaped plan, located some 150 metres north-west of the dome, that was initially targeted.

The surrounding buildings were instantly razed to the ground, but this building, having been blasted almost directly overhead, remained partly standing, with its charred facades and the metal framework of the dome still visible today. Other structures not far from the dome withstood the blast thanks to their concrete architecture, rather than the wood of most housing at the time.

The thirty or so employees working in the building died instantly
