Situated on the wall of the enclosure of one of the impressive bunkersof the German submarine base (U-Boot) in Lorient, a plaque in tribute to Jacques Stosskopf , French marine engineer general, hero of the Resistance, of Alsatian origin and fluent in German, he joined the Alliance network as early as 1942. He was arrested on February 21, 1944, by the gestapo in Vannes, and his departure for Germany was interpreted by the people of Lorient as a promotion following his collaboration with the authorities of the Third Reich . In reality, Jacques Stosskopf was deported to the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp, where he was coldly executed on September 1, 1944, on the orders of SS-Obersturmführer Karl Gehrum just before the arrival of the Allies...

Jacques Camille Louis Stosskopf, ingénieur général de 2e classe du génie maritime, a brilliant engineer possessing the finest qualities, never ceased to manifest the highest patriotic sentiments.
Powerfully contributed to the victory by providing, during the occupation, precious intelligence on enemy naval activity and in particular on the movements of submarines based at Lorient.
Arrested by the gestapoon February 21, 1944 for his activity in the Resistance, then deported forced admiration by his quiet courage and indomitable energy.
Disappeared, promoted to the rank of Commander in the National Order of the Legion of Honor by decree of October 25, 1945, promotion including the award of the war cross with palm.
