After the liberation on August 22, 1944, the town of Romans sur Isère was recaptured on the 27th at around 1pm, by the Germans coming up from Montélimar, after fierce fighting. Their mission was to protect the eastern flank of their retreating army in the Rhône valley.
On the 28th, the Germans carry out several reconnaissance operations along the Isère river.
The FFI, Victor Boiron, Louis Amadeo (known as L. Montanet) and Jean Tournissat (known as Paquebot) come face to face with a patrol. A cruel and unequal battle ensues, and the FFI are killed. Jean Tournissat, an air force captain, had been sent from Algiers, by the BCRA, to prepare a landing field for DC 3 on the plain of Vassieux en Vercors.
