Paradise Massacre
Paradise Massacre
In this place on May 27, 1940, 97 soldiers of the Royal Norfolk and other regiments were massacred by a company under the command of Hauptsturmführer Fritz Knöchlein, of the 14th Company of the SS Totenkopf Division, while attempting to withdraw to Dunkirk.
Soldiers of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Norfolk Regiment found themselves isolated from their regiment. They occupied and defended a farm located in the hamlet known as Le Paradis in the commune of Lestrem, against attacks by SS troops. Running out of ammunition, they surrender to German troops. German soldiers lead them along the road against a wall and mitrail them. Ninety-seven British soldiers are thus sommarily executed. Two survived with wounds and went into hiding until they were captured by Wehrmacht soldiers a few days later. (source wikipedia)
