Here lies the body of Lieutenant Charles H. Kern.
On August 02, 1944, while flying over Pontivy with three fighters from the 358th Fighter Group, Lieutenant Charles H. Kern's P-47 suddenly crashed here.
While flying over Pontivy on a mission to cover a German convoy bombing raid, Lieutenant Charles H. Kern's plane crashed for no apparent reason. According to the report, it crashed because of its own bombs. Charles H Kern managed to avoid Mr. Juin's farm, but died burnt to a crisp in the wreckage of his P-47, despite the presence of local residents who came to the rescue.
At the time, the German occupiers refused to allow the pilot's remains to be buried in the Pontivy cemetery. After the liberation of Pontivy, his body was transferred to the Chartres cemetery, and finally repatriated to Farmingdale in the USA.
