The State Museum of Majdanek

Majdanek or Maïdanek is at once an extermination camp, a prisoner of war camp (Soviet and Polish) and a Nazi concentration camp located 2 km south of the center of the Polish city of Lublin. It was the headquarters of the Aktion Reinhard under the leadership of Odilo Globocnik. Unlike many Nazi camps, Majdanek was not tucked away in a remote forest, hidden from view by natural barriers or surrounded by a so-called security buffer zone. It was established in October 1941 on the orders of Heinrich Himmler, following his visit to Lublin in July of that year. In February 1943, it was transformed into a concentration camp and placed under the direction of the Waffen SS. 18,000 Jews from the Warsaw ghetto were transferred there in May 1943 after the liquidation of the ghetto.
