Fort Montbarey
Fort Montbarey
This fort, born of King Louis XVI's desire to make Brest an impregnable stronghold was the most important link in the city's western defense (planned for 500 to 600 soldiers). This fort was used by the Germansin 1944, who installed a battalion of paratroopers there during the siege of Brest by the Americans.
It was after numerous assaults and the intensive use of flamethrower tanks that the garrison surrendered on September 16, 1944.Rebuilt after the Second World War, Fort Montbarey housed, during the Cold War, the command center of the "navy" DCA (Défense Contre Avions) of the port of Brest and then received in its courtyard two large bunkers. In 1984, it was made available by the French Navy as a museum on the history of Finistère during the Second World War, resistance and deportation.
An exhibition on "Brest in ruins" is also on display. On display is a "death wagon" used for deportation and numerous American vehicles and DCA(Defense Against Aviation) parts, as well as an English tank Churchill.
The museum also manages more than 10,000 files and documents of resistance fighters, soldiers and victims of the Second World War. It welcomes over 10,000 visitors every year.
