He volunteered at the Ecole Spéciale Militaire in 1893, and spent most of his career in Algeria, the Sahara and Morocco in the 64th Infantry Regiment (RI), then the 3rd Zouave Regiment, the 15th RI (May 1909 to December 1914), with whom he began the First World War, chef de corps of the 18th Battalion of Foot Chasseurs and lieutenant-colonel of the 366th RI.
During the World War II he became the Chief of Passive Defense for the Paramé (Ille-et-Vilaine) sector. The Germans expelled him because he was a senior officer, so he took refuge with his daughter's in-laws at the château de Rosgrand (Rédéné), which André de Neuville had made one of the Resistance centers of the secteur de Quimperlé. Surrounded by German troops on July 26, 1944, who found radio equipment there, Torquat was arrested as a terrorist, incarcerated in Quimperlé's Bel-Air school and shot at Kerfany-les-Pins, in the Quimperlé forest.
