Carantan/Saint-Côme-du-Mont: the major challenge of the landings once the beaches were under control. 6,500 German paratroopers reinforced by a division of SS tanks attempt to repel the 10,000 American paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division, dropped north of Carentan. At stake: securing the junction between the Omaha and Utah beaches. The confrontation lasted six days and ended with a bayonet charge, one of the first in Europe during the Second World War in the history of the American army. Casualties on both sides were appalling.

On June 7, at around 8pm, there was no longer any organized resistance d at Saint-Côme-du-Mont Carentan appeared e be the next objectivevital on the Allied list. Its capture would ensure the junction needed to coordinate the assaults of the Utahand Omaha beach forces. If the Germans guarded the town, Allied forces would be divided during the most crucial phase of this campaign. So Carentan had to be taken.
The Scraming Eagles were appointed to the task. But the way to get there wasn't so easy. The road passed through canals, marshes and the La Douve river, all guarded by the Germans.
