Camp du Vernet

The camp du Vernetd'Ariège is a French internment camp located in the commune of Le Vernet in Ariège, on the edge of Route Nationale 20, north of Pamiers. It was created in 1939, initially to intern Spanish Republicans on the run following their defeat in the Civil War. It was closed in 1944.
The Vernet camp was used to regroup the 12,000 Spanish fightersand other foreigners of the Division Durruti from 1939 onwards, following the defeat of the Spanish Republic. When the World War II is declared, "undesirable" foreigners include members of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and the Austrian Communist Party (KPÖ), anarchists and anti-fascist intellectuals. Members of the International Brigades were interned at Le Vernet in terrible conditions described by writer Arthur Koestler, himself interned at Le Vernet from October 1939 to January 1940
