The martyrs of Plounévézel

On June 8, 1944 in Lamprat, a hamlet of Plounévézel, young Resistance fighters invite themselves to lunch at the farm of'Yves Mével, mayor of the commune. Their leader had been wounded the previous day in an English bombardment of the railroad line at Port-de-Carhaix.
Six Germans arrive by chance intending to commandeer carts to transport equipment and take them prisoner, except Jean Manach, aged 20, hiding in the chimney. Eugène Léon, 24, on whom the Germans find a pistol, and who then tries to escape, is immediately shot. The Germans set fire to the farm.
The eight resistants(five others were also arrested for a time, but released) arrested undergo interrogation and are torturedin the Coat-Penhoat woods, on the road to Poullaouen; then crammed, bound, into a truck that heads for Rennes.
On the way, they were successively hanged:
☨Jean Le Dain, 23, to an electricity pole at the bottom of the Moulin-Meur descent;
☨Georges Auffret, 23, at the entrance to Carhaix, route de Brest;
☨Marcel Goadec, 22, in the middle of Carhaix town, rue de la Fontaine-Blanche (now rue des Martyrs) ;
☨Georges Le Naëlou, 22 years old, in the town of Le Moustoir;
☨Marcel Le Goff, 22 years old, at the La Pie en Paule fork;
☨Marcel Bernard, 19, at the entrance to Rostrenen;
☨Louis Briand, 18, in the town of Rostrenen and
☨François L'Hostis in Saint-Caradec.

The man responsible for these executions is said to be a feldwebelfrom the 8th Kreta parachute regiment, which was heading for the Normandy front. A stele erected at Lamprat commemorates these tragic events, a detailed account of which was given by Éric Rondel in a chapter of his book "Crimes nazis en Bretagne". Jean Le Manac'h (1925-2003) was the only Resistance fighter to survive the tragedy.
