Memorial to internment and deportation
In June 1940, the former Royallieu barracks became a camp where the German army grouped French and British prisoners of war. It was later transformed into a transit camp before prisoners were deported to Germany or Poland.

The Royallieu camp was the only camp in France under the exclusive control of the German administration (SD: Service de Sécurité). From 1941 onwards, Royallieu became a "permanent concentration camp for active enemy elements", and a reserve of hostages: resistance fighters, union and political activists, Jews, civilians caught up in roundups, foreign nationals, etc. 45,000 people passed through the camp before being deported to Nazi concentration or extermination camps. On March 27, 1942, the first train from France to Auschwitz left Royallieu, carrying over a thousand Jews. From 1942 to 1944, the Royallieu camp was the transit point for deportees bound for Mauthausen, Ravensbruck or Buchenwald.

More than 54,000 members of the Resistance, union and political activists, rounded-up civilians and Jews were interned there1. 50,000 of them3 were deported to the concentration and extermination camps of Auschwitz, Ravensbrück, Buchenwald, Dachau, Sachsenhausen, Mauthausen and Neuengamme. Frontstalag 122 was characterized by the internment and deportation of "politicians" and "hostage" personalities: communists, trade unionists, resistance fighters and civilians. Camp C", or the Jewish camp, which was kept secret, was already a place of extermination by hunger and disease, given the conditions of internment.
