The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is an American national institution, opened in April 1993, located in Washington, DC.
In 1980, the United States Congress authorized the creation of the museum on the basis of the 1979 report by the Chairman of the Holocaust Commission, created by Jimmy Carter. With the help of Miles Lerman, the museum raised around $190 million for its construction and the acquisition of collections. The museum was designed by architect James Ingo Freed (whose family had to flee Nazi Germany in 1938) of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, in association with Finegold Alexander + Associates. Although the building's exterior is in the monumental style of the large government buildings in the immediate vicinity, the austere, eerie and uncomfortable design was deliberately chosen to appeal to visitors.
