"These are my credentials" (These are my credentials) It was here on September 19, 1944, during the surrender of General H.B Ramcke, commander of the Festung Brest that the phrase that has since become the motto of the American 8th infantry division was uttered.
According to several sources, when the American brigadier-general ,Charles D. W. Canham, summoned the ,German general Ramcke, to surrender, the latter allegedly asked to see his credentials. General Canham then pointed to his troops and replied, "These are my credentials."
