Aubry en Exmes
Village of Aubry located near the forest of Gouffern where the German army retreated during the day.
Night being more favorable for fleeing "the Falaise pocket". But the village at the heart of the "pocket" became the scene of the German rout. Its burnt-out church became a hideout.
Panel text:
"Holed up in the Gouffern forest during the day, it was mainly 30TH at night that the Germans tried their luck to escape the artillery and fighter bombers. The spectacle was Dantesque, as the German engineers had opened passages in the hedgerows to allow convoys to pass. All is smoking wreckage. Already, corpses are decomposing, and distraught and wounded horses are criss-crossing the plain. As night falls, it becomes impossible to move about the battlefield, with only the burning church as a landmark. "
