LA BUTTE DE LA MALTIÈRE
You're here at "La Maltière", a former military field and execution site for resistance fighters during the Occupation.
- A MILITARY FIELD -
Before the Second World War, this was a shooting range where soldiers from Rennes barracks and men performing their service came to train. In 1937, the army decided to build an earth mound for soldiers to practice shooting.

- GERMAN OCCUPATION
On June 18, 1940, the Germans arrived in Rennes and took possession of all military buildings and barracks. They also occupy the commune of St-Jacques de la Lande, which has an airfield and numerous military airfields, such as the one at La Maltière. During the occupation, this shooting range was transformed into a place where resistance fighters were executed. It was at La Maltière that 76 men, condemned by the German military tribunal in Rennes, were executed. The Germans remained at the site until the liberation of Rennes on August 4, 1944.

- A PLACE OF REMEMBRANCE
At the end of the war, this site became a place of tribute and remembrance of the Resistance. Every year since 1947, ceremonies have been held on August 4 and December 30. Through these commemorations, we pay tribute to all the men who fought and resisted for our freedom.

76 MEN FACE THEIR DESTINY
Three months after their arrival, on September 17 1940, the occupiers began executions. Marcel Brossier, a man from Rennes, is the first Breton shot as an "example", for cutting a telephone transmission cable. The second, Roger Barbé, was from Lannion. After them, 74 executions follow. Most were railroad employees, laborers, all condemned by the German court for committing acts of sabotage against the occupier.

- LA FUSILLADE DU 30 DÉCEMBRE 1942 -&
On December 30, 1942 took place the execution that most marked the minds of the Rennes population. Twenty-five men aged between 19 and 43 were shot in groups of two or three between 9:20 and 10:18. The men were part of the resistance movement"l'Organisation Spéciale", close to the Communist Party. They organized acts of sabotage, various attacks against collaborator organizations, but never caused the loss of human life.

- FOLLOWING EXECUTIONS
After December 30, 1942, arrested resistance fighters were most often transferred to Paris to be shot at Mont-Valérien or deported in numerous convoys. At La Maltière, the executions resumed from March to July 1944. Despite heavy repression, with numerous arrests and deportations, resistance actions multiply (propaganda, sabotage, etc ...). Two days after the Allied landings in Normandy, on June 6, 1944, many executions take place in the Colombier barracks.
