Memorial to the soldiers of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion who took the Le Mesnil sector in the early hours of operations on the night of June 5-6, 1944.
The 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion was formed in July 1942. It served in the Normandy landings on D-Day in June 1944 and in the airborne crossing of the Rhine as part of operation Varsity. After the end of hostilities in Europe, the battalion returned to Canada, where it was disbanded on September 30, 1945.
This regiment took part in the Battle of the Bulge and to have advanced further than any other Canadian unit into enemy territory.
